Department of Environment’s launch of the constructed wetland wastewater treatment system at Taylor’s Housing, Basseterre.

From May 18 to 20, 2026, the Department of Environment launched an exciting pilot project! A constructed-wetland wastewater treatment system at Taylor’s Housing in Basseterre. This initiative marks the beginning of a national learning hub focused on climate-resilient, low-energy, and decentralized wastewater solutions.

During the three-day event, which was part of the GEF CReW+ Project, participants engaged in a blend of classroom learning and hands-on training. Officers and stakeholders from St. Kitts and Nevis gathered to explore treatment processes, water quality monitoring, and management practices. The event concluded with a symbolic commissioning ceremony that highlighted the importance of local ownership and collaboration.

We were fortunate to partner with several organizations, including WaterWorks Solutions, Daniel & Daniel Engineering, and Roland Stanley Construction, along with support from GEF, UNEP, IDB, and OAS.

This nature-based treatment system offers numerous benefits for St. Kitts and Nevis. It will help reduce nutrient and bacterial pollution, protect our precious coral reefs and beautiful beaches, strengthen our tourism sector, enhance community well-being, and improve water security.

Moreover, the system serves as an example of how we can align with national and regional environmental initiatives. It supports biodiversity conservation, strengthens coastal resilience, aids climate adaptation, and aligns with global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Importantly, it also offers a scalable, cost-effective alternative to traditional centralized sewage infrastructure, which is crucial for sustainable growth in our communities.
